Joe Salama has been in San Rafael since 1973. He went to Glenwood Elementary and San Rafael High School. While in high school, he worked at Shoreline Pharmacy in Mill Valley, which his father owned and operated for over thirty years. Joe Salama's parents still live in Glenwood and his brother and sister live in Marin with their families.

Joe Salama earned an undergraduate degree in Economics from U.C. Berkeley and a law degree from Boston University where he concentrated in Dispute Resolution. Later he returned to U.C. Berkeley to obtain his Mediation Certification.

Joe Salama is now a practicing mediator and attorney throughout the Bay Area. Joe Salama has helped resolve hundreds of cases in the areas of general civil litigation, commercial litigation, personal injury, medical malpractice, real estate, landlord/tenant, employment, construction defect, admiralty/maritime, and family law, among others, in federal court, in state court, before arbitration panels, the Department of Labor, the Workers Compensation Appeals Board, and in mediation.

Joe Salama has been involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through Team In Training, raising money for blood cancer research since 2001. Since that time he has served as a mentor, captain, and fundraising captain for Team In Training, run marathons in Alaska, Death Valley, and San Diego, and has helped coordinate the fundraising of over a quarter million dollars for the cause.
